Requirements to become an Uber driver
First, you must meet the basic requirements common to most ride-hailing platforms. They determine your eligibility with Uber and the regional authorities.
- Be at least 21 with a category B licence held for several years
- A clean criminal-record extract (model for contact with minors depending on the region)
- A vehicle meeting the platform's and your region's criteria
- Medical fitness and, depending on the region, training or an exam
The ride-hailing / taxi licence by region
Paid passenger transport is a regional matter: rules differ between Brussels, Wallonia and Flanders. In most cases you need an operating authorisation (taxi / ride-hailing licence) issued by the region or municipality, plus a driver card.
Check with the administration of the region where you plan to operate for the exact procedure, fees and timelines before you start driving.
Registering as self-employed or setting up a company
Uber pays you as a professional, so you need a status. The simplest route is to register as self-employed via a business one-stop shop, which gives you an enterprise number (CBE) and, if needed, a VAT number. You also join a social insurance fund.
- Self-employed status (main or secondary occupation)
- Enterprise number (CBE) and VAT activation
- Affiliation with a social insurance fund
The business address to get started
Every Belgian company needs a registered-office address, listed in the CBE and used for official mail and invoices. If you'd rather not use your home address, an approved domiciliation address is a professional, affordable and compliant way to launch your driver activity.
